How to Create Cursive Worksheets

Which Cursive Font Should You Choose?

Dancing Script is a flowing, decorative script that looks lovely for names and short phrases, but its capitals and joins are more stylized than most school models. Edu QLD Beginner uses simpler pre-cursive joins and is closer to a classroom style. Letter shapes differ between schools and countries, so check which model your child is taught and pick the font that looks most like it.

Good Words to Start With

Begin with words made from similar strokes, such as mom, man and mini, then move on to short everyday words like cat, sun and hat. Names, days of the week and spelling-list words come next, followed by whole sentences. Type one word per line in the text box and each row of the worksheet will show a different word.

Using the Three Guide Lines

The top line shows where tall letters such as l, b and h reach. The dashed middle line is the height of small letters like a, c and e, and the base line is where every letter sits. Joined writing depends on consistent size, so point to the lines as your child traces and ask them to keep the small letters at the dashed line.

Who cursive worksheets are for

Cursive works best once a child can already form every print letter with steady, correct strokes. For many children that is around ages 6 to 7 (Grade 1 / Year 2) or later, but there is no single right age, and schools differ in when they teach it. If your child is younger or still unsure about print letters, start with pre-writing worksheets and letter formation worksheets, then come back to cursive.

Cursive practice builds pencil control, an even slant and even spacing between letters and words. Short sessions are easier on small hands than one long one.

Choosing a cursive font

The font menu has several cursive styles, and the choice changes how the sheet looks and what it teaches.

• Playwrite US Trad is a classic joined cursive with the slanted, flowing letters many American schools teach. It is the default.
• Playwrite GB J is a joined cursive in a UK school style.
• Playwrite US Modern and Playwrite GB S are simpler pre-cursive styles. Their letters are not joined, which makes them a gentle first step.
• Dancing Script is a decorative script. It looks pretty, but it is better for fun projects than for learning to write.

Schools teach slightly different cursive models, so if your child's class uses a particular style, choose the font that looks closest to it. All fonts are open-source and stored on this website.
