Learning numbers step by step
Children learn to say numbers first, then to recognize them, and finally to write them. Number tracing supports the last two steps: each digit is traced several times so the shape becomes familiar. Ready-made pages cover 1 to 20 and 1 to 100, and the generator accepts any range up to 1000.
Beyond digits
Number words such as seven and twelve are some of the first sight words children read, so number words worksheets double as spelling practice. Skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s prepares children for multiplication.
Which number page for which age?
- Ages 3 to 4: big numbers one at a time, 1 to 5 or 1 to 10. Try number tracing for preschool or number tracing 1 to 10.
- Ages 5 to 6: numbers to 20 together with their number words, on number tracing for kindergarten.
- Ages 6 to 7: counting to 100 and counting in steps with number tracing 1 to 100 and skip counting.
Counting comes before writing
A child who can write a 7 but cannot count seven objects needs more counting practice, not more tracing. Count buttons, steps or crackers aloud, touch each one once and say the last number loudly. When that feels easy, tracing the digit connects the quantity to the symbol.
Backwards numbers are normal
Many young children write 2, 3, 5, 7 or 9 the wrong way round, and this usually fades with practice. Say the starting point and direction aloud as your child traces, and praise the effort rather than correcting every number.

Frequently asked questions
When should my child be able to write numbers?
Many children write some numbers at four or five. In the US, the kindergarten standards (Common Core K.CC) ask children to write the numbers 0 to 20 by the end of the year. Children learn at different speeds, so use the age as a guide, not a deadline.
Should we start with 0 or with 1?
Most children start with 1 to 10. Zero is introduced as “none,” and it is easier to understand once your child can count objects. The number tracing generator has a 0 to 10 preset when you are ready.
Can I make a number worksheet for any range?
Yes. The number tracing generator accepts any range up to 1000, in dotted, outline or solid gray, with or without the number words.
What is the difference between number tracing and skip counting?
Number tracing practices writing every number in order. Skip counting practices counting in steps of 2, 5 or 10, which prepares children for multiplication.
