How to write the letter G
The capital G is written in two strokes, and the small g in two strokes. The worksheet above is already set to this letter. It shows a model of each letter with green numbered start points and red direction arrows, then rows of dotted copies to trace and empty space to write on your own. Change the letter case, the size or the number of rows in the settings.
Capital G
Start near the top right and curve counter-clockwise (left, down and around), like a C, all the way up to the middle of the right side. Then draw a short line to the left from there, back into the letter.
Small g
Draw a small circle, starting near the top right and going counter-clockwise. Then draw a line down the right side from the top of the circle, through the base line, and finish with a hook that curls to the left below the line.
Teaching tip for G
The small g is a "tail" letter: its tail drops below the base line, like j, p, q and y. The round part sits on the base line at the same size as the other small letters. Start it like an a, d or q, with a counter-clockwise circle.
The sound of G and words to practice
The letter G usually stands for the sound /g/ as in goat (and the soft sound /j/ before e, i and y, as in giraffe). Words to practice: goat, grapes, girl, gift, guitar, gate. Say each word, listen for the first sound and trace the letter. Try the beginning sounds worksheets to match the sound to pictures, or trace the words themselves with word tracing.
Letters that look alike
The letter G is easy to mix up with Letter Cc and Letter Qq. Practice them on separate days, one at a time, and say the starting point out loud each time before the pencil touches the paper.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the small g have a tail?
The tail lets the round part of the g sit on the base line like every other small letter, with the long line hanging down into the space below. Letters with tails are g, j, p, q and y. If your child's g floats above the line, draw the tail area lightly with a pencil or use writing paper with a space below the base line.
