How to write the letter W
The capital W is written in one stroke, and the small w in one stroke. The worksheet above is already set to this letter. It shows a model of each letter with green numbered start points and red direction arrows, then rows of dotted copies to trace and empty space to write on your own. Change the letter case, the size or the number of rows in the settings.
Capital W
Start at the top left and slide down to the bottom. Go up to near the top in the middle, slide down again, and finish by going up to the top right. The rhythm is down, up, down, up, in one stroke.
Small w
Draw the same shape as the capital W, but smaller, starting at the middle line and ending at the middle line.
Teaching tip for W
Make the two halves of the w the same width, and make the middle point nearly as high as the outside points. A w with a low middle looks like two u shapes joined together.
The sound of W and words to practice
The letter W usually stands for the sound /w/ as in water (rounded lips). Words to practice: water, watermelon, whale, worm, window, wagon. Say each word, listen for the first sound and trace the letter. Try the beginning sounds worksheets to match the sound to pictures, or trace the words themselves with word tracing.
Letters that look alike
The letter W is easy to mix up with Letter Vv and Letter Mm. Practice them on separate days, one at a time, and say the starting point out loud each time before the pencil touches the paper.

Frequently asked questions
Why is W called "double u" and not "double v"?
The name goes back to old Latin writing, where the letter V stood for the sound /u/ as well as /v/. Two of them side by side were called "double u", and the name stuck. Today the letter looks like a double V.
